The abbreviation “TMJ” stands for temporomandibular joint, a joint that acts in a similar fashion to a hinge and connects your lower jaw to your skull. This joint is found on both sides of your head, right in front of your ears. In some cases, one can develop a TMJ disorder, otherwise known as TMD. TMJ disorders can result in pain and inflammation not only in the TMJ, but also in the muscles that control the movement of the jaw. This can mean headaches, tension, and even the inability to open and close the mouth comfortably. Often times, the exact cause of TMJ disorders is difficult to determine, given the fact that there may be a combination of factors involved. For example, genetics, arthritis, teeth grinding and jaw injury can all contribute to jaw pain. However, the good news is that the discomfort associated with TMJ disorders is usually temporary and can be self managed or treated non-surgically.
A common way to treat TMJ disorders is by utilizing Botox®. The Botox® is injected into the masseter muscle, blocking the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, thereby causing temporary relaxation of the muscle. As a result, there is less tension in the jaw. A study from 2012, found that this treatment decreased jaw pain for as long as three months following the procedure.
